“I could have scored the game-winning goal, but he refused to give me the ball and squandered it, so it is either sell him or I walk away”- Manchester United Bruno Fernandez was upset with a Man United player yesterday for refusing to give the ball to him
Manchester United opened their Europa League campaign in the same manner they completed their previous Premier League season: with a painful 1-1 draw against FC Twente.
United had a strong start, but Twente sat back and covered the gap between the lines, frustrating Erik ten Hag’s team.
Constant mobility, on the other hand, maintained United appearing formidable while limiting Twente’s threat. United took the lead in the first half thanks to Christian Eriksen’s thundering shot off a loose ball in the box.
The dominance continued throughout the second half, until a series of individual errors allowed Twente to burst forward in the center and score a shock equalizer.
Ten Hag gambled with a triple change, but there was little joy as United were held to a disappointing stalemate for the second match in four days.
Here’s how the players scored:
Andre Onana โ 5
Lammers’ ploy of striking at the far post only to be beaten at the near post worked. Had nothing else to do.
Noussair Mazraoui โ 7
Aside from one cross-field ball that found the opposition, another flawless performance from a guy who is gradually becoming one of the first names on the teamsheet.
Harry Maguire – 5.
Was left on his backside after an ill-advised sliding challenge in no man’s land as a Twente player pushed forward through the center for the equalizer in the second half. Attacking threat to set pieces
Lisandro Martinez โ 7
He found himself in an unexpected offensive position during a threatening time in the first half, which he took full advantage of. Confident in defense and really smooth on the ball.
Diogo Dalot โ 6
Almost responsible for a goal after his sloppy response allowed Twente to nibble the ball off of him for their best chance of the game early on. Higher criteria are now being used to assess performance.
Manuel Ugarte โ 6
At times, it appeared like they were a step behind the game’s speed and were overly eager to attack the ball and press high, which did not always work. Precious minutes with new coworkers are beneficial.
Christian Eriksen โ 7
Scored a rocket shot to give United the lead and make it three goals in four matches. He gave the ball away for Twente’s equalizer by wasting time and being clueless of his surroundings.
Bruno Fernandes โ 4
His performance in the Crystal Palace game was not his best since he kept dropping the ball, and tonight was no exception. His passes are bold when they work, but infuriating when they don’t. It is been the latter for the past two games. His direct free-kick at the goalie with United’s final opportunity of the game exemplified this.
Amad – 7
Always looked to go forward, and his two-footedness is a huge asset to the assault. United look threatening whenever he has the ball. Garnacho came off as Ten Hag rotated his forwards.
Marcus Rashford – 8.
Is Rashford now back at his best? There was no goal this time, but his overall quality of play is much different, as seen by a beautiful elastico in the first half when he may have passed it backwards four games ago. Despite appearing to be the most dangerous, I was led away in a perplexing manner.
Joshua Zirkzee โ 6.5
He is a hesitant striker who will never be prolific, but his link-up play improves United’s performance. It was more of the same. Perhaps Hojlund and Zirkzee will form a collaboration.
Substitutes
Alejandro Garnacho scored seven out of ten. Hag sent him out with the directive “defend, protect, defend,” but he had to turn almost immediately to offensive mode after Twente equalised. He seemed really intimidating and appeared to be planning something.
Rasmus Hojlund โ 6
Looks rusty after a couple tennis balls sped into him and pinged off of him. He needs more minutes to regain his sharpness, since he does not appear to be on the same wavelength as his colleagues.
Kobbie Mainoo โ 6
Made some good forward runs but was caught a couple times in his European debut for United.
Mason Mount โ 6
As always, the finished result is absent, despite the continuous pressure. Needs time to regain match rhythm following his recent injury comeback.
