Premier League officials have provided an explanation as to why Arsenal’s Gabriel Martinelli wasn’t awarded a penalty following a challenge by Liverpool’s Ibrahima Konate.
During the first half of this critical game, VAR reviewed Konate’s tackle on Martinelli but concluded it did not justify a penalty.
The clash occurred as Martinelli found himself squeezed between Konate and Trent Alexander-Arnold while trying to control the ball close to the six-yard box.
Though Konate appeared to bring Martinelli down, Stockley Park officials Michael Salisbury and Darren Cann supported the referee’s choice to continue play, determining that Konate had made contact with the ball.
Following the challenge, Kai Havertz missed a shot over the bar, which led to frustration among Arsenal players who felt a penalty was warranted.
