According to reports, Manchester United is considering Andriy Lunin, the custodian for Real Madrid, as a possible replacement for Andre Onana. This is an unexpected move.
Manchester United has reportedly made a bid for Lunin as they get ready for the impending summer transfer season, according to Nacional.
This season, Lunin has made an excellent impression for Real Madrid, filling in brilliantly for the injured Thibaut Courtois, who has been sidelined due to an ACL injury.
Lunin is aware that Courtois will probably retake his spot as the starting goalie upon his return, so even with his strong showings, he might think about moving to a new team.
The fact that Manchester United is considering its alternatives with regard to their starting custodian, Andre Onana, who has had a lacklustre rookie campaign, coincides with their interest in Lunin.
After an incredible Champions League run with Inter Milan, Onana left the club to join Manchester United in the summer of last year for a sizable €51 million plus bonuses.
The 27-year-old goalie had high expectations, particularly following his outstanding efforts in the Champions League, when he was essential to Inter Milan’s run to the championship game.
Even though Onana made a lot of mistakes in his Manchester United rookie season, he did show development in 2024.
He has been under fire for a number of expensive errors, most notably during Manchester United’s group stage matches against Bayern Munich, Galatasaray, and Copenhagen in the Champions League.
German reports indicate that Onana is being considered by Bayern Munich as a long-term replacement for veteran custodian Manuel Neuer, who turns 38 this year.
In the meanwhile, Manchester United may choose to pursue a transfer for Lunin because his Real Madrid contract is scheduled to expire in 2025.
Lunin’s possible transfer might provide Manchester United a dependable goalkeeping alternative as they try to bolster their roster in preparation for the new campaign.
