Micky van de Ven delivered one of the most impressive assists ever seen from a center-back in Premier League history during Tottenham Hotspur’s game against Manchester United on Sunday.
Ange Postecoglou’s side started off strongly at Old Trafford, with Van de Ven embarking on an astonishing 60-yard run that dismantled United’s defense. His precise pass found Brennan Johnson, who finished from close range, giving Spurs an early lead. Despite the goal, it was Van de Ven’s remarkable effort that stole the spotlight.
Gary Neville, commentating for Sky Sports, called it “absolutely brilliant,” adding, “It’s one of the best runs I’ve ever seen from a center-back.”
Van de Ven’s performance earned widespread praise, and he now tops the list of Spurs players for Premier League assists this season.
However, some fans were critical of Manchester United’s defensive organization. One commented, “How can a team be this poorly set up? Van de Ven had so much space to exploit.” Another fan marveled at Van de Ven’s speed, saying, “He’s like a cheat code. One of the fastest runners in the league.” A third simply referred to him as “a machine.”
On the other hand, many pointed to United’s defensive flaws, with one supporter stating, “That run was incredible, but United’s defense was terrible.” Another added, “Ugarte should’ve stopped Van de Ven, but he didn’t recognize the danger in time.”
Van de Ven’s pace is well-known, holding the record for the fastest sprint in Premier League history at 37.38 km/h last season.
Postecoglou also spoke highly of the Dutch defender, recently labeling him “a truly special player” after a similar solo run where he covered more than 70 yards to assist Heung-min Son against Everton.
