Manchester United are gearing up for a busy transfer season as they plan a major summer overhaul under the guidance of Erik ten Hag and the club’s new part-owners, INEOS. Their first significant acquisition could be Paris Saint-Germain’s Manuel Ugarte, with reports indicating that the deal for the tenacious midfielder is nearly finalized.

United have underperformed in recent years, prompting fans to demand the Glazer family sell their stakes in the club, especially after the decline following Sir Alex Ferguson’s departure. In February, INEOS acquired a 25 percent stake in Manchester United, initiating a comprehensive shake-up at the staff and boardroom levels. Their first major consensus appears to be on Ugarte, with the 23-year-old reportedly close to joining United.

According to ESPN Uruguay, Ugarte is on the verge of leaving PSG, with a move to United highly likely to be completed soon. French source L’Equipe confirmed United’s interest in Ugarte on Tuesday, and the negotiations have rapidly advanced. ESPN’s reports suggest that this potential transfer could be the first significant signing of the INEOS era, providing fans with much-needed optimism, especially given Casemiro’s recent dip in form.

Renowned transfer expert Fabrizio Romano told GIVEMESPORT that United have been in talks with PSG regarding Ugarte, who joined PSG from Sporting Lisbon on a five-year contract last summer. Despite showing promise, he seems set to leave the French capital.

Last season, Chelsea’s attempt to sign Ugarte failed when PSG outbid them, but the Uruguayan midfielder, currently competing in Copa America, appears close to a move to the Premier League.

Ugarte, described as “phenomenal” and eager to move to Old Trafford, played 25 Ligue 1 matches for PSG last season. However, his exclusion from crucial Champions League semi-final matches against Borussia Dortmund and sporadic appearances towards the end of the Ligue 1 season might have influenced his decision to seek an exit.

Even with the loan signing of Sofyan Amrabat, United struggled defensively across all competitions, exiting the Champions League early and recording their worst Premier League finish ever. Should Casemiro leave the club this summer, it would create a significant gap in their defense that Ugarte is well-positioned to fill, making his potential signing a crucial move for United at this juncture.
