This is how many games Dominic Szoboszlai will miss after the red card yesterday against Manchester City

Dominik Szoboszlai is set to serve a suspension after seeing red in the dramatic closing moments of Liverpool’s loss to Manchester City on Sunday.

The Hungarian midfielder had earlier put the Reds ahead with a superb free-kick, but late chaos followed as Liverpool pushed for an equaliser with Alisson Becker up the pitch.

When Rayan Cherki’s long-range effort rolled into the net, Szoboszlai had sprinted back in a last-ditch attempt to stop it.

In the build-up, Szoboszlai tugged Erling Haaland’s shirt as they chased back, with the City striker then grabbing him in return. After a VAR review, referee Craig Pawson ruled out the goal and sent off Szoboszlai for denying a clear goalscoring opportunity, as his foul came first.

The decision sparked anger from Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville, who criticised VAR for ruining what he felt should have been a memorable moment, arguing that both fouls could have been offset to let the goal stand.

The red card adds to Liverpool’s growing problems. Already filling in at right-back due to injuries to Jeremie Frimpong and Conor Bradley, Szoboszlai will now miss Liverpool’s next Premier League game.

Because the dismissal was for DOGSO and not violent conduct, the suspension is expected to be just one match.

That means he will be unavailable for Wednesday’s trip to Sunderland, with Curtis Jones a likely option to cover at right-back.

It’s another blow for Arne Slot and his squad in a season already full of setbacks, leaving Szoboszlai forced to watch from

the sidelines.
