Graham Potter is reportedly being considered for the role of Sweden’s national team manager, just days after he was linked to potentially replace Erik ten Hag at Manchester United. Potter, who was dismissed by Chelsea in April after winning 12 out of 31 matches, has remained out of work since.
Recent reports had suggested that Potter might be a candidate for the Manchester United managerial position if Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS decided to change leadership. Ratcliffe, set to purchase a 25 percent stake in the club, is anticipated to make changes to the support staff at Old Trafford.
Potter, respected by INEOS chief Dave Brailsford, had previously been connected with Nice, another club owned by Ratcliffe. There were also reports of interest from Napoli for Potter to take over their managerial vacancy.
Now, Potter is emerging as one of the leading contenders to take on the role of Sweden’s national team manager following Janne Anderson’s resignation. Sweden failed to qualify for Euro 2024, and the country is in need of new leadership.
Potter is no stranger to the Swedish football scene, having spent seven and a half years at Ostersund, helping them ascend from the fourth tier to the Europa League. The Swedish FA general secretary, Andrea Mllerberg, confirmed that Potter is under consideration for the job.
Mllerberg said, “You can say this: The list of names that I have received or that I am reading…it is clear that he is part of that list. We’ll see what we filter down and who is interested in this role. You probably have to be passionate about wanting to be the national team coach, especially given that it is different from club football. You may have to be ready for certain challenges.”
After leaving Ostersunds in 2018, Potter returned to England to join the Championship club Swansea. Following a successful first season, he took over as Brighton’s head coach. Under Potter’s leadership, Brighton underwent a significant transformation in playing style, eventually achieving a ninth-place finish in the 2021-22 season. Potter decided to accept the Chelsea job in the following season, but now, with the potential opportunity to become Sweden’s national team manager, this could impact any plans for his future appointment as the Manchester United manager. Questions regarding Ten Hag’s future at Manchester United have also arisen following their 3-0 defeat to Manchester City.
