It has been informed to Chelsea that in order to sign Sporting CP star Viktor Gyokeres in January, they will need to match his release clause.
The 25-year-old has been linked to Chelsea, but it has been stated that Arsenal, a rival team in London, will compete with them for his services. Sporting manager Ruben Amorim, however, asserts that the Portuguese team would not let him go and will instead fight for the €100 million (£86 million/$109 million) release clause in his contract.
Regarding the possibility of selling Gyokeres, the coach reportedly stated, “He will only leave if someone pays the buyout clause in January—otherwise he will stay,” according to Fabrizio Romano.
Gyokeres, who has a contract with Sporting through 2028, joined the club during the summer transfer window from English Championship outfit Coventry. After opening the score in their Primeira Liga match against Porto on Monday, he increased his tally to an amazing 17 goals in 19 games across all competitions for the club. The 25-year-old Sweden international played with Brighton for three seasons, but he only made eight appearances because he was loaned to Coventry, Swansea, and St. Pauli before joining the latter team in 2021.
In an attempt to bolster their assault, it is unclear if Chelsea will be prepared to match the prolific forward’s January release clause. The return of Christopher Nkunku, who Mauricio Pochettino stated will make his debut in the Carabao Cup match against Newcastle this week, has given the goal-shy Blues a lift.
