The manager of Manchester United, Erik ten Hag, has criticised and referred to himself as “deluded” for statements made after the team’s loss in the derby

Erik ten Hag, the manager of Manchester United, has been informed he is “deluded” in response to remarks he made following Sunday’s derby loss.

The Red Devils travelled to the Etihad to play Manchester City, the reigning champions and local rivals. Despite grabbing the lead, Pep Guardiola’s team defeated them 3-1, and the Red Devils came away empty-handed. Erling Haaland’s late goal and a brace from Phil Foden were sufficient to ensure that Marcus Rashford’s incredible goal was ultimately in vain.

With 27 shots on goal to United’s three and the most of the possession, City showed utter control. In spite of this, Ten Hag showered his team with praise at the close of play, stating that the Red Devils’ defence was “brilliant” and that they could have won the game if it weren’t for the “small margins.”

Chris Sutton, a well-known analyst and former Chelsea player, has responded forcefully to Ten Hag’s post-match argument. In an interview with the podcast It’s All Kicking Off, he clarified, saying, “Erik ten Hag is misguided. Under him, I believe Man United has come full circle.

“I picked a cricket score that day, and I went for it again yesterday. In his first Manchester derby, they lost 6-3. Though I understand that managers must present a positive image, the biggest worry is hearing Ten Hag say things like “we are progressing,” “that was a good performance.” Man City is so far ahead of Man United.

“If I were a Manchester United supporter, I would seriously doubt the manager’s statements and the team’s performance. The fact is, beyond this season, I don’t think anyone sees Erik ten Hag staying at United.”

Should the encounter on Sunday fail to emphasise the enormous disparity in calibre between the two sides, United’s interpretation of the league table is dismal. With a huge goal differential and an 18-point lead, City is four spots ahead of them.

United’s chances of qualifying for the Champions League are getting slimmer by the week, while Guardiola’s team is going for their sixth championship in seven seasons. Ten Hag’s team is now 11 points behind Aston Villa, who are currently holding the much sought-after fourth place in the table, in sixth place.

United isn’t exactly helped by the schedule either. Ten Hag still has games left to play against other “big six” teams, Arsenal and Liverpool, both at home, and a difficult journey to west London to play struggling Chelsea.
