Chelsea Star player has today announced his retirement from football after shocking scenes

Few choices in Chelsea history will ever be more noteworthy than the choice of Ryan Bertrand as the starting left flank for the 2012 Champions League final by interim head coach Roberto Di Matteo. Just twenty-one at the time, Bertrand had only a dozen top flight starts to credit and had never participated in the competition at all. Oh, and he played left back.

In addition, he would be the only player ever to make his debut in the competition’s final and raise the Big Ears trophy at the end as well! Though Bertrand is always etched in club history as one of our Heroes of Munich, he would wind up playing just three more Champions League games in his career, all the following season, and would leave Chelsea not long after in pursuit of more consistent playing time.

Bertrand, 34 and out of the game for last year, has announced today that he is formally retiring. After leaving Chelsea in 2014, he enjoyed seven extremely successful years at Southampton; thereafter, he joined Leicester City in 2021 where injuries would restrict him to only a dozen or so games in two years. His contract ran out last summer, and he had been without a club ever since.
