“Lies were told!” “People will only remember this because Mister Guardiola has much more power than me”-Man City LoaneeCancelo has opened up on his exit from Man City and what exactly went down. Safe to say he won’t be returning when his loan ends this summer
In a fiery interview with Portuguese media, Joao Cancelo took aim at Manchester City and Pep Guardiola, and he didn’t hold back at all.
The 29-year-old full-back last appeared for the Citizens in a match in January of last year. He is currently on a season-long loan at La Liga team Barcelona.
After Nathan Ake and Rico Lewis were chosen ahead of Cancelo, there was allegedly a violent altercation between Guardiola and Cancelo on the training pitch regarding his lack of playing time.
On January 31, 2023, he would sign a contract with Bundesliga team Bayern Munich, an announcement that took many by surprise considering City’s move to trade Oleksandr Zinchenko the previous summer.
According to a report, Cancelo was not behaving in a way that aligned with Guardiola’s ‘no bad faces policy’ at City, in addition to his frustration with his lack of playing time.
Additionally, staff believed that he was not listening to instructions or paying attention in tactical meetings.
Cancelo has discussed his decision to leave Manchester City seeking regular first-team minutes with a number of media outlets after his departure.
However, his most heated interview to date was perhaps with the Portuguese publication A Bola, in which he retaliated against claims that he mishandled his exclusion from the team.
According to The Guardian, Guardiola was dissatisfied with Cancelo’s attitude when he was given less playing time and felt he needed to be loaned away.
“Lies were told!” he exclaimed in reaction to such allegations.
“I’ve always been a good teammate for them; ask Rico (Lewis) or (Nathan) Ake.” That’s the manager’s opinion, but I don’t feel superior to them or inferior to them.
“I choose to stay because it is untrue. Given that I played a major role for Man City throughout my tenure, I believe they were a little unappreciative of me when they made that statement. I have always given my all and never wavered in my dedication to the team and the supporters. I recall being assaulted and robbed once, and the next day I was playing Arsenal at the Emirates.”
“These are things you don’t forget,” Cancelo continued. “I was scared and left my wife and daughter alone at home. Only because Mister Guardiola speaks with far more authority than I do and I like to keep to myself will people remember this.
“I am satisfied with what I accomplished, and I would rather know that I am speaking the truth. I am an honest person; I never tell lies. I hope everything goes well since I had a great time playing football and supporting the squad when I was there. They are still the team that is most likely to win the Champions League.
It was also inquired of the Portugal international if he anticipated being loaned out twice.
“No, I really didn’t think so, but I live my life by the moment,” he replied. “I was loaned to Bayern Munich last year due to a number of circumstances. Even if City wins the Champions League, I have no regrets.
“I believe that, even before my contract was renewed, I made the right decision by going to a club that genuinely wanted me. In the six months I was there, the club provided me a lot.
“The club is incredible, and I worked with several amazing players. Then I moved here, cut my pay, and I don’t feel the least bit disturbed about it. I was going to visit Barcelona for the third time, and now I’m here.”
