Mourinho makes it a point to A dig by Manchester United that sheds light on his job: “I wasn’t the coach”
During his time managing Manchester United, Jose Mourinho has alluded to internal conflicts by saying the team overburdened him with duties.
From May 2016 to December 2018, Mourinho led United to victory in both the Carabao Cup and Europa League during his first season in charge. In his two full seasons as manager, he led them to sixth and second place places in the Premier League, winning 84 of his 144 games in charge.
Before the 2018–19 season began, the Portuguese manager was a strident critic of United’s inability to sign the players he wanted during the summer transfer window. After his team’s humiliating 3-1 loss to Liverpool, which dropped them 11 points outside the top four and 19 points from the top of the Premier League, he was fired.
By then, a lot of bridges were burned, as players had become disenchanted with his harsh style. Now, Mourinho has hinted that he was never satisfied with United’s setup. After being fired by Roma in January, he expressed his wish to return to management to Fabrizio Romano during an interview, outlining his ideal situation at a potential new team.
“I’m dedicated to my club at all times. Fans are irrelevant. Country and club are irrelevant. Thus, I believe they sense that I’ll give it my all. And I’ll always be more than just a coach because of my personality,” he remarked.
People are aware that in certain club structures, in addition to being the coach, you may also have to serve as the technical director, the communication director, the player’s advocate, and the image guardian. However, the coach finds something objectionable about that as well.
“Because it is what I want to do as a coach, myself. The best situation, in my opinion, is when the team is set up so that the coach can do their job on the field, in the weight room, and on the sidelines. However, take on the role of coach.
“At Inter, I was the coach. At Real Madrid, I was the head coach. In my first stint at Chelsea, I was the head coach. At Porto, I was the coach. It is really challenging for a coach to be the coach in some other teams when I wasn’t. However, I believe that the foundation of my relationships with the supporters of each football team I’ve worked for is that they see me arrive, I put on the shirt, and I stand up for them.
The sixty-one-year-old was fired by Roma in January and is still without a club, even though he was given the opportunity to relocate to Saudi Arabia. Although he indicated he is content to wait and find the ideal position, he stated he would never rule out accepting a position at a Saudi Pro League team.
