Emi Martinez pours champagne over Unai Emery’s head as soon as Aston Villa secure Champions League football
Aston Villa clinched Champions League football as a result of Tottenham’s 2-0 loss to Manchester City, and their celebrations were spectacular.
All of the attention looked to be on City, who, if they won, would move two points ahead of Arsenal at the top of the Premier League standings with one game remaining.
However, Villa were in the background, knowing that a Spurs defeat would ensure Champions League football for the next season.
The Villans have won the European Cup twice – in 1981 and 1982 – but have not qualified for the competition since.
Following Monday’s 3-3 draw with Liverpool, Villa manager Unai Emery stated that his team needed to keep their focus on their final-day encounter in case their Champions League campaign came down to the wire.
However, the Spaniard, his players, and coaching staff gathered in a function room for their annual awards ceremony to watch the Spurs game, and the celebrations were wild once the result was announced.
Martinez, one of the Premier League’s most colorful personalities, quickly took center stage, spilling champagne all over his boss.
Elsewhere, Lucas Digne yelled “Another one!” into the camera, as other players danced on the table as the significance of the club’s success became clear.
Emery was nominated for the Premier League’s Manager of the Season title earlier this month, and few supporters would be disappointed if the Spaniard won the coveted honor at the conclusion of the season.
Villa close their season with an away trip to in-form Crystal Palace on Sunday, and while they will be anxious to end on a good note, Villa fans can rest assured that a defeat would not jeopardize their Champions League hopes.
