Manchester United’s summer transfer activity has been slow to start, but a significant deal seems imminent.

The club faces a major squad overhaul in the coming months, with several areas under review. Key priorities include strengthening the center-back, central midfield, and striker positions. This follows a challenging season where United finished eighth in the Premier League.

Despite the league disappointment, the season ended on a high note with an FA Cup victory over Manchester City, securing a spot in the Europa League. However, this did not prevent co-owners Ineos from conducting a review of manager Erik ten Hag’s performance.

There were initial concerns about Ten Hag’s future, but after evaluating other candidates, including Thomas Tuchel, Ineos decided to retain him for the upcoming season.

Ten Hag, now 54, is reportedly close to signing a new contract that will extend his tenure at Manchester United until 2027. According to The Mirror, he has agreed in principle to a two-year extension worth nearly £27 million, despite recent uncertainty about his position. The contract details are expected to be finalized this week and will include performance-related clauses.

As part of this new agreement, changes to the coaching staff are anticipated, with former striker Ruud van Nistelrooy set to join Ten Hag’s team.

Currently earning £9 million annually, Ten Hag has led United since 2022, securing two trophies: the Carabao Cup in 2023 and the FA Cup in 2024.

Contract discussions have included debates over Ten Hag’s job title, with Ineos favoring a head coach structure over a manager role. Ten Hag has insisted on maintaining control over transfers, though Sir Jim Ratcliffe prefers a sporting director to oversee recruitment.

In a 2022 statement, Ten Hag emphasized the importance of having control over transfers, while also supporting a collaborative approach.

United is also in talks with Dan Ashworth, currently on leave from Newcastle United, to fill the sporting director role. Additionally, Jason Wilcox has been appointed as technical director to develop a cohesive playing style for all levels of the club.
