Manchester United are set to sign a new central defender this summer as Raphael Varane’s contract nears its end. One of the prominent candidates is Barcelona’s Ronald Araujo. According to a report from Sport, Manchester United are making significant efforts to acquire the Uruguayan defender.

The Red Devils are reportedly prepared to nearly double Araujo’s current salary, offering him a weekly wage of £228,000, up from £114,000. Meanwhile, Barcelona is keen on extending Araujo’s contract beyond June 2026. If an extension isn’t agreed upon, Barcelona is expected to demand at least £63.5 million for his transfer.

Araujo has been impressive in La Liga, achieving a 90 percent pass completion rate and averaging nearly three long balls per game. He also excels in aerial challenges with a 73 percent success rate, and averages 4.3 recoveries and 2.5 clearances per game, making him a strong contender to replace Varane.

However, Manchester United should be wary of his injury history. Since the 2020/21 season, Araujo has missed nearly 75 games due to injuries. This is similar to the injury issues Varane has faced. Given these concerns, Manchester United should consider offering no more than £45 million for Araujo.

The club has been plagued by defensive injuries over the past year, so it is crucial to avoid overspending on another injury-prone center-back. While Araujo would be a valuable addition, the club must negotiate wisely to secure a reliable player without risking financial overinvestment.
