Manchester United are progressing towards completing the transfer of Bayern Munich’s center-back, Matthijs de Ligt. Initially reported by The Peoples Person, United considered the Dutch defender as a potential backup plan to Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite. However, United’s interest in De Ligt has intensified, and Bayern is reportedly open to selling him for €70 million.
Signs now suggest that De Ligt’s move to United is likely. Reports indicate that De Ligt has expressed his desire to leave Bayern, mainly due to dissatisfaction with manager Thomas Tuchel. Bayern’s pursuit of defenders Hiroki Ito and Jonathan Tah further implies that De Ligt could see less playing time next season. Discussions have already taken place with multiple Premier League clubs, including United.
Journalist Florian Plettenberg confirmed United’s interest, stating, “Manchester United have initiated talks with Matthijs de Ligt’s representatives. United have been gathering more information about the 24-year-old as he could leave Bayern for a suitable offer. De Ligt is ready to leave Bayern and open to joining ManUtd, as he does not want to be the fourth or fifth choice center-back. However, there has been no direct contact between the clubs yet.”
Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano also noted, “Manchester United contacted Matthijs de Ligt’s camp, considering him as a potential new center-back along with Branthwaite. De Ligt is open to joining United, even without Champions League football. Bayern might sell De Ligt this summer, pending United’s decision.”
The Telegraph added that while United have not yet contacted Bayern directly, they seem prepared to make a move. The newspaper suggested that United might pay significantly less than the £65 million Bayern paid Juventus for De Ligt in 2022. While De Ligt could bolster United’s defense, his recent injury history could be a concern for a club already dealing with numerous injuries.
