Manchester United are seeking a new left-back for the upcoming season after enduring a challenging campaign with their primary options frequently sidelined. Fabrizio Romano has exclusively informed GIVEMESPORT that the club has a serious interest in Bournemouth’s young talent, Milos Kerkez, as they look to bolster their squad.

Luke Shaw managed only 12 Premier League appearances last season due to injuries, and Tyrell Malacia was absent for nearly the entire season because of a knee injury, despite a promising debut season after joining from Feyenoord in 2022. Both players have the quality to start for United, but their availability issues have prompted the club to consider more reliable options. Kerkez has emerged as a potential target.

In June, reports surfaced that United were keen on the Hungarian youngster following his impressive debut season in the Premier League. Romano tweeted earlier this summer that United were keeping tabs on Kerkez, who Bournemouth signed from AZ Alkmaar last summer. However, Bournemouth would demand a significant transfer fee to let the 20-year-old leave after just one season.

United are exploring various new signings, especially with INEOS coming in as minority owners to enhance the squad. The left-back position is a priority due to Shaw and Malacia’s recent injury problems. Other potential targets for United include Joshua Zirkzee, Manuel Ugarte, and Matthijs de Ligt.

Romano told GIVEMESPORT that United’s interest in Kerkez is “genuine.” He mentioned that while Kerkez is a strong candidate, the club is also considering other options to fill the left-back position. He noted, “Manchester United’s interest is genuine, so I think Kerkez could be one of the options, but not the only one from what I have heard. They are also assessing other options. I think they’re waiting to see what happens with any other opportunities in the market for that position, and then they will make a decision. But left-back is another position they want to cover for this summer, for sure.”

Kerkez impressed for Bournemouth this season after joining with little fanfare despite his promising background. He played youth football in Serbia, Austria, and Hungary before moving to AC Milan at 17, thanks to a call from Paolo Maldini. However, limited first-team opportunities led him to AZ Alkmaar, where he became a regular, scoring three goals in 33 Eredivisie appearances.

Having adapted well to the Premier League under Andoni Iraola, Kerkez’s performances have caught United’s attention. If Erik ten Hag decides to pursue him, a transfer could materialize.
