Even with Matthijs de Ligt potentially joining, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has indicated that manager Erik ten Hag may aim to acquire two center-backs.
The loss of Varane is a significant blow given his extensive experience and defensive capabilities. According to The Athletic, signing a new center-back is a top priority for United this summer, alongside acquiring a central midfielder and a striker.
Last season highlighted United’s defensive issues, with players like Jonny Evans getting significant playing time due to injuries suffered by Luke Shaw, Lisandro Martinez, Harry Maguire, and Victor Lindelof. This left Ten Hag with limited defensive options.
In his Daily Briefing, Romano emphasized that Branthwaite remains a key target for United despite the potential addition of de Ligt. There is a considerable gap between the two clubs’ valuations, with Everton demanding £65-70 million due to Branthwaite’s age, Premier League experience, and talent—a price that is currently beyond United’s budget. However, if Everton lowers their asking price, United are prepared to renew their pursuit.
