Ruud van Nistelrooy has rejoined Manchester United, this time as an assistant to manager Erik ten Hag amid a coaching reorganization.
Van Nistelrooy, who had a standout five-year stint as a striker for United starting in 2001, scored 150 goals and ranks 11th on the club’s all-time scorers list. He departed the club on a contentious note after a dispute with Sir Alex Ferguson.
After leaving his position as PSV Eindhoven manager at the end of the 2022-23 season—having secured the Dutch Cup but faced player dissatisfaction with his coaching style—Van Nistelrooy has now returned to Old Trafford.
He will be joined by Rene Hake, who left his role as Go Ahead Eagles manager. Both have signed contracts until 2026, in line with Ten Hag’s extended contract.
Ten Hag expressed his enthusiasm about the additions, stating, “I am delighted Rene and Ruud have agreed to join our project, adding a wealth of experience, knowledge, and new energy to the staff. It’s an ideal time to refresh the coaching team as we aim to build on the past two years’ successes and strive for further achievements.”
Former assistant Mitchell van der Gaag has left United to seek managerial opportunities, along with forwards coach Benni McCarthy. Steve McClaren will continue as senior first-team coach, while Darren Fletcher transitions from technical director to a first-team coaching role, a position now filled by Jason Wilcox.
This is part of a significant restructuring that recently saw Dan Ashworth appointed as sporting director and Omar Berrada set to be confirmed as chief executive.
Ashworth remarked, “Together with Erik, we are working to strengthen all areas of our men’s first team operations, and refreshing the coaching staff is a vital part of that. It’s particularly gratifying to welcome Ruud back to the club where he achieved so much as a player. I’m confident that he and Rene will instill the winning mentality and high standards we aim for.”
