VERY SAD NEWS has been announced for Ex Manchester United Star as he goes off injured 20 minutes into his debut match
In the Coppa Italia, Raphael Varane was playing competitively for the first time for Como away against Sampdoria.
Varane had just been playing for 20 minutes before an injury forced him off the field.
The World Cup champion was able to go, but when Como’s medical personnel took him to the sidelines, he seemed uncomfortable.
ADDITIONAL UNITED STORIES
Although the extent and cause of Varane’s injury are yet unknown, it is obvious that the former Manchester United defender is not off to the best start.
View Tweet: The fitness record of Raphael Varane
The fact why Manchester United decided not to renew Varane’s contract was partially due to his dubious fitness record in addition to his hefty salary.
He made 22 Premier League appearances in 2021–2022 and 24 the next year. Last season, there were additional 22.
However, he only made 16 Premier League starts in 2023–2024—less than half of the team’s games. This was his lowest volume of starts ever.
Varane could have started 113 games in his three seasons at Manchester United, but he was not revealed until kickoff in 2021–2022.
Varane only made 58 of his 113 possible Premier League starts, or little over 50% of them.
Even if Leny Yoro, who replaced Varane, has had a rough start due to injuries, the choice to split company with Varane was not inherently bad.
Whether the result is big or small, his own early injury at Como supports the notion that United was wise to discharge him.
