Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag voiced his concerns after his team narrowly secured a 1-0 win over Fulham in their Premier League opener on Friday. Despite the victory, the match left the fans at Old Trafford wanting more as United struggled to generate clear chances for much of the game.

Opportunities were scarce, and when they did emerge, they were often wasted until substitute Joshua Zirkzee, making his first appearance for the club, scored a late winner. Ten Hag stressed the need for the team to be more clinical, especially in the penalty area.

He noted, “One aspect we need to work on is closing out games effectively in the box. This issue has been apparent in our recent friendlies and our loss to Manchester City in the Community Shield. We created enough opportunities and shouldn’t have to rely on last-minute goals. We need to be calmer and more decisive to finish off our opponents.”

Ten Hag suggested that the teamโ€™s sluggish start could be due to the early stages of the season, with players still finding their rhythm. However, he expressed confidence in their ability to score, emphasizing that the squad has plenty of talent capable of hitting the target.

The decisive goal came from Dutch forward Zirkzee, who came off the bench to convert a late cross from Alejandro Garnacho. Ten Hag commended Zirkzee, highlighting his recovery from an injury at Bologna that kept him out of the European Championship for the Netherlands.

“We need to address a few weaknesses in his game,” Ten Hag stated. “But he brought some qualities we were missing, and he showed them right away. Heโ€™s excellent at linking up play, which suits our style. However, he must consistently get into the box and score, which he did tonight. Heโ€™s a Manchester United player, and itโ€™s great to see a striker score on his debut.”
