United began their 2024-25 season with a narrow 1-0 win over Fulham, secured by an 87th-minute goal from new signing Joshua Zirkzee. However, they now face the challenge of taking on Brighton without some important members of their squad.
During a pre-match press conference, Ten Hag confirmed the absences of Malacia, Højlund, and Shaw, saying, “Tyrell Malacia and Rasmus Højlund are unavailable. Luke Shaw, of course, [is also out].”
Malacia has been sidelined since the beginning of the 2023-24 season due to a knee injury, and Ten Hag has indicated that the defender is expected to return in a couple of months. Højlund, who suffered a hamstring injury during a pre-season match against Arsenal, is likely to return by the end of August.
Luke Shaw, who sustained a calf injury during pre-season training, is expected to be out until mid-September. Diogo Dalot filled in as left-back during the Fulham match, with Noussair Mazraoui playing as right-back.
Ten Hag also revealed that Victor Lindelof will miss the Brighton match due to a toe injury. The Swedish center-back also missed the previous match against Fulham. Ten Hag expressed optimism about Lindelof’s recovery, stating, “He has a toe issue. We hope he can return soon, but he won’t be available this weekend.”
With Lindelof out, Harry Maguire and Lisandro Martinez started against Fulham, and Matthijs de Ligt made his Manchester United debut as a substitute. However, United will also be without 18-year-old center-back Leny Yoro, who is injured after a pre-season incident.
