**Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic Expressed Concerns Over Manchester United Teammate to Sir Alex Ferguson**

Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic once raised concerns with Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson, claiming that a teammate was not performing up to the required standard, according to Patrice Evra.

The former United captain shared this story on a recent episode of “The Overlap,” a podcast sponsored by Sky Bet. During the conversation, Evra, alongside Gary Neville, Wayne Rooney, Roy Keane, and Ian Wright, offered candid insights into his experiences at the club.

Evra specifically reflected on the early days of goalkeeper David de Gea, who joined Manchester United in 2011 from Atletico Madrid for ยฃ18.9 million at just 20 years old. Ferguson had scouted De Gea personally, seeing him as the successor to Edwin van der Sar, who had recently retired. However, De Gea initially struggled to adapt to the physicality and pace of English football, becoming a frequent target for opposing teams.

Evra revealed that Ferdinand and Vidic, United’s key central defenders, voiced their frustration to Ferguson about De Gea’s lack of communication, especially compared to Anders Lindegaard, another goalkeeper at the club. “Edwin van der Sar was the leader of the defense for us,” Evra explained. “But when De Gea arrived, he wasnโ€™t vocal. Rio and Vidic believed Lindegaard, who was more communicative, should play instead.”

They asked Ferguson to make a definitive choice between the two keepers, noting that the constant rotation was destabilizing the defense. Despite De Gea’s initial mistakes, Ferguson decided to stick with him, a decision that proved wise in the long run.

De Gea would go on to win the club’s Player of the Year award four times and set the record for the most clean sheets in Manchester United’s history, with 190 to his name. Evra recalled a turning point when Ferguson bluntly criticized De Gea during a difficult match but also showed his faith in him by naming him the team’s primary goalkeeper. “Sir Alex told De Gea, ‘You know what, you are really struggling, but you will play every game. You are my number one because I believe in you.’ Thatโ€™s when David began to establish himself.”

Although De Gea left United last summer and went without a club for a year, he recently returned to action with Fiorentina in Serie A, helping them secure a spot in the UEFA Conference League.
