Former Manchester United defender who left the club this summer has been forced to retire after a horror injury

According to a source, Raphael Varane, a former defender for Manchester United, faces a significant risk of having his two-year contract with Como canceled after just one month.

On June 30, Varane was one of several famous players that departed Manchester United as free agents. Anthony Martial and Brandon Williams both left, while Omari Forson left as well after turning down the team’s offer of a new deal.

Varane had no particular interest in making the much-rumored move to Saudi Arabia. The French veteran, however, choose to stay in Europe and signed with Como in Serie A.

Having made their first-ever comeback to Serie A in twenty-one years, Como launched a massive summer recruitment campaign under the direction of Spanish legend Cesc Fabregas.

In addition to Varane, the Italian team signed well-known veterans like Andrea Belotti, Pepe Reina, Sergi Roberto, and Alberto Moreno.

Along with them were a few rising talents, such Nico Paz of Real Madrid and Maximo Perrone of Manchester City.

Varane, who had an injury during his debut in the Coppa Italia first round loss to Sampdoria, is one player for whom the left-field shift has not yet proven successful.

There is a great deal of uncertainty around Varane’s ailment, with some reports saying it is a knee problem and many others saying it is a thigh issue.

Either way, it is certain that Varane is out of action, and the most recent information coming out of Italy suggests that his Como days may be behind him.

This comes after Como’s 25-man roster for the Serie A season was finalized on Friday night with the passing of the transfer deadline, and Varane was left off of it.

How about ending Varane’s contract?
For the 2024–2025 season, Como sent 25 players to Lega Serie A, but Raphael Varane was not one of them, according to Sport Mediaset.

The experienced French defender—a former member of Real Madrid and Manchester United—arrived as a free agent in the summer but sustained an injury before to the championship’s commencement.

“Varane sustained an injury on his Coppa Italia debut against Sampdoria, and Como is now contemplating ending his contract.”

Varane’s Serie A registration would not be possible for Como until after the January transfer window.

But instead of waiting six months, it seems that Como is considering letting the 31-year-old go after just five weeks of his two-year contract.

Varane was quite excited about the “very exciting” Como transfer.
Varane already discussed the Como transfer with the official Man Utd club media.

The defender acknowledged that it was a major pull to play for Fabregas, who was frequently his opponent during their time at Real Madrid and Barcelona, respectively.

In addition, Varane called the Como project “quite intriguing,” even if it now seems to be going south.

Two days after finalizing his transfer to Como in late July, Varane stated, “At first, I was intrigued to find out what the project was all about, and then I instantly recognized that it was extraordinary.” “I was curious to learn more as it was distinct from any other offer I had received.

The project grew more intriguing to me as I learned more about it, which changed my idea of what I wanted to accomplish. When the project materialized, it quickly rose to the top of the list, and we were able to seal the agreement.

“I am overjoyed. It is thrilling and there is a lot to do. I have worked at the highest level for a long time, so it is really exciting to be able to share that expertise and assist a club in growing and, ideally, reaching the top.

“I am going to see Cesc again, but not as a rival. I adore his playing philosophy and his enthusiasm for the game of football.

We had very easy communication, therefore I am hoping our interactions will be quite fruitful. Either way, I am coming with a lot of humility to support the squad and the club’s development.
