When Liverpool scored their first goal at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon, Roy Keane questioned the placement of Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui of Manchester United.
After 35 minutes, Liverpool broke the deadlock after having what they believed to be an early opening disallowed for offside. After Ryan Gravenberch misplayed a pass from Casemiro, the attacker slipped in Mohamed Salah and produced a beautiful cross that Luis Diaz nodded in.
Casemiro’s first-time ball, meant for Kobbie Mainoo, set up the goal. However, the Brazilian was shortly again at fault for Liverpool’s second goal, which Diaz scored after Salah provided the opportunity.
Though Keane was angry with the lack of defensive protection in the wide areas, he acknowledged that Casemiro’s assist helped Liverpool score the first goal of the match. Mazraoui and Dalot had both gone into attacking positions, and it appeared like United would advance up the pitch through Casemiro’s ball.
“The mistake from Casemiro here… for all his expertise, it is hardly a first-time pass,” Keane said in a halftime speech to Sky Sports. The danger is not worth it.
“They scatter everywhere when they lose it (the ball). It is true that players might make mistakes, but they happen all the time.
“Look at your right back, and tell me where it is. How is your left-back doing? You have no power over others.
“Liverpool can and will punish [them].” You will be punished by skilled gamers.”
