Following Katie Zelem’s summer departure, Manchester United has designated Maya Le Tissier as new captain for the next 2024/25 season.
Originally from Brighton & Hove Albion two years ago, the center-back has become a reliable component of the backline of the team very fast.
She remarked, “it is an honour to be appointed captain of this great football club and I will wear the armband with true pride, to help push this squad to victory on and off the pitch”.
Zelem had been in the post since 2019; she raised the FA Cup in May but left following the end of her contract the following month. The midfielder later signed with Angel City in the NWSL.
Having a great relationship with Millie Turner, Le Tissier had had a remarkable run of seasons that helped United to reach a WSL record 14 clean sheets in 2022โ23 when it placed second.
Le Tissier has made four appearances thus far outside of club football following Euro 2022 and gained a maiden senior England call-up. She travelled with the team to Australia but finally had little influence; she was on the standby list for the World Cup 2023. However, the 22-year-old’s international career has been impeded by Lionesses manager Sarina Wiegman’s assessment of her as a full-back, instead of a centre-back, which she played for former club Brighton
Along with Ella Toone, who has been named the new vice-captain, Le Tissier was chosen United’s joint Players’ Player of the Year at the conclusion of the 2023/24 season. Though Hayley Ladd would typically assume the armband in the skipper’s infrequent absence, there was previously no designated deputy to Zelem.
Le Tissier signed a new contract in April until 2028; Toone signed a similarly long contract in 2022 running until the conclusion of the following season. With 53 strikes in 164 appearances for United, the latter is also their all-time leading appearance maker and goalscorer.
