Victor Gyokeres Discusses Potential Manchester United Move by January
Manchester City is reportedly preparing to replace their current director of football, Txiki Begiristain, with the same person responsible for Victor Gyokeres’ transfer to Sporting CP, who has been linked to Manchester United.
Begiristain, now 60, is expected to step down from his position at the end of the season. However, his successor is anticipated to begin transitioning into the role early next year, ensuring a smooth handover over six months. Reports suggest that the club has already reached an agreement with a well-known figure in European football to take over the position.
Hugo Viana, currently a leading candidate, has been linked to the role. Renowned football journalist Fabrizio Romano believes that Manchester City is keen on hiring Viana as their new director of football. This move could complicate Manchester United’s efforts to sign Gyokeres in upcoming transfer windows due to Viana’s close ties to the player.
Viana, who has spent the last six years at Sporting, played a pivotal role in securing Gyokeres’ move from Coventry City, where the striker previously played in the Championship. Viana personally traveled to England last year to finalize the deal. Following Gyokeres’ successful debut season in Portugal, Viana expressed satisfaction, praising the player’s performance as “excellent.”
Despite this, Viana acknowledged the uncertainties in football, admitting that “an offer could still come” for Gyokeres. While no significant offers emerged over the summer, Viana may reconsider his stance if he transitions to Manchester City.
With City selling Julian Alvarez to Atletico Madrid without bringing in a replacement, the club currently lacks a strong backup for Erling Haaland. It is possible that City could use the £82 million earned from the Alvarez sale to trigger Gyokeres’ £84 million release clause.
