A former Premier League star has suggested that Joshua Zirkzee consider an unexpected loan move after a tough start to his Manchester United career.
Zirkzee joined Manchester United from Bologna in July for a reported £36.5 million. He had an impressive season at Bologna, helping the team secure fifth place and qualify for the Champions League, with 11 goals in 34 league games.
However, his time at United hasn’t gone as planned. Despite a promising debut where he scored the only goal in a 1-0 win against Fulham on August 16, Zirkzee has failed to score in his next six Premier League appearances. While he has shown glimpses of talent in his overall play, he hasn’t yet delivered the goal-scoring consistency United needs.
In light of this, Paolo Di Canio, a former player for West Ham and Sheffield Wednesday, has recommended that Juventus—one of his previous clubs—approach United about a potential loan deal for Zirkzee in January.
“There’s so much uncertainty at Manchester United that a loan could be possible,” Di Canio told TuttoSport.
“With [Rasmus] Hojlund and [Marcus] Rashford already in that role, Zirkzee could be a valuable asset for coach Motta, offering an alternative to Vlahovic.”
“I’d start discussions now for a loan with an option to buy. Zirkzee may not be a 25-goal scorer, but he improves the team around him.”
Di Canio also pointed out that Zirkzee’s lack of pace has been a challenge in adapting to the Premier League.
“For the Premier League, he’s a little slow. He could prove me wrong with goals and great performances, but it’s a more physical league, and referees don’t call fouls as often,” Di Canio remarked.
“We saw the impact he had at Bologna.”
As of now, there is no indication that Juventus or any other club has made an official approach for Zirkzee ahead of the Janua
ry transfer window.
