After United paid Sporting about £9.25 million, Amorim signed a contract to become their new manager; however, he will not formally assume leadership until November 11.
As a result, he is coaching the Lisbon team, which he has guided to two Portuguese league titles, in their last two games.
His final home game will be a Champions League match against United’s rivals, Manchester City, before he leaves on Sunday for a trip to his old team, Braga.
During his pre-game news conference on Monday, Amorim made it obvious that he is very much focused on the here and now.
When Cotterill said, “You may be a hero even before you get on a plane to Manchester,” Amorim was responding in Portuguese. Have you considered that?
“I apologize, but I am unable to communicate in English,” he remarked courteously. They will miss me in Portugal, I am afraid. I must thus communicate in Portuguese.
Amorim’s attitude was characterized by Cotterill as a “cold shoulder to all your English supporters” when the press officer clarified that he would be able to communicate in English if he joined United.
