Joshua Zirkzee started during the Netherlands’ 1-1 draw against Bosnia & Herzegovina on Tuesday evening – and the Dutch media didn’t hold back with their assessment of his performance The Man United forward played 77 minutes last night and it’s certainly got everyone talking… 👀 Fans are all saying the same thing 😓😓
Joshua Zirkzee, 23, has faced challenges in finding consistent form since his £36.5 million move from Bologna to Manchester United in July 2024. Although he made a strong impression by scoring on his debut in a 1-0 victory over Fulham on August 16, the former Bayern Munich talent has not found the net again and has primarily been restricted to appearances off the bench.
Despite his struggles, Zirkzee was selected by Ronald Koeman for the Netherlands’ Nations League matches against Hungary and Bosnia. While he didn’t play in the Hungary match, he started against Bosnia in Zenica on November 19. Unfortunately, the game did not prove to be the turning point he needed.
When asked about Zirkzee’s display, Koeman refrained from commenting on individual players, saying, “I am not going to talk about individual player performances.”
However, the Dutch press was less forgiving in their evaluations. AD rated Zirkzee 5/10, the lowest of all players, criticizing his failure to capitalize on a clear scoring chance before halftime. Meanwhile, De Telegraaf gave him a slightly better score of 6/10 but highlighted his missed opportunity in the 41st minute, where he failed to convert a close-range cut-back.
The reviews pointed to a disappointing performance, with one critique noting, “This was Zirkzee’s chance to make a statement, but he appeared aimless. His inability to produce a decisive finish from ten metres out revealed his biggest flaw.”
As he returns to Manchester United, Zirkzee will aim to make an impression on new head coach Ruben Amorim. With an upcoming away fixture against Ipswich Town on November 24, he has a crucial opportunity to secure his place in the team and regain his scor
ing form.
