Roy Keane delivered a harsh critique of Manchester United’s performance in their 1-1 draw with Ipswich Town, criticizing the team for losing momentum and adopting an overly defensive strategy after an early lead. Speaking on Sky Sports, Keane expressed his frustration with United’s inability to build on a strong start under their new manager, Rúben Amorim.

United began the match at Portman Road on a high note, with Marcus Rashford scoring within the first two minutes, thanks to a precise cross from Amad Diallo. The goal set an optimistic tone for Amorim’s debut as manager. However, the team’s initial energy waned as Ipswich grew into the game, putting United under increasing pressure. Although Andre Onana made a spectacular save to deny Liam Delap, Ipswich eventually equalized before halftime with Omari Hutchinson’s deflected strike.

While Keane acknowledged the quality of United’s opening goal, he did not hold back in his criticism of their subsequent performance. “It was a fantastic start, exactly what you’d hope for in the first minute,” he admitted. “Rashford’s finish might not have been clean, and the goalkeeper might be at fault, but credit goes to the wing-backs for their attacking intent. That’s the kind of proactive play United need.”

However, Keane’s praise was short-lived as he pointed out the team’s inability to sustain their dominance. “After the goal, they did very little. Ipswich deserved their equalizer. United started brilliantly but then just backed off. It was as if they were waiting for something to happen, instead of taking control. They handed Ipswich the confidence to fight back.”

Keane also addressed what he sees as a broader issue with United’s recent performances. “There’s no intimidation factor with this team anymore,” he said. “Opponents know they can grow into the game because United let them. Ipswich believed they could get a result, and they did.”

His scathing analysis highlighted the challenge ahead for Amorim, who must find ways to inject urgency and consistency into his team’s play. While there is optimism surrounding Amorim’s appointment, this match underscored the significant work needed to ensure United can maintain pressure and close out games effectively.

For Keane, the game epitomized a recurring flaw in United’s approach—their habit of fading after promising starts. Unless Amorim can foster a more determined and aggressive mindset within the squad, these struggles are likely to persist, leaving both fans and analysts questioning whether the team is ready to compete at the hig

hest level.
