If he chooses Liverpool over Man City, I’ll resign as a football coach… He’s the player we can’t afford to see playing for them; they may become undefeatable with him” – Pep Guardiola reacts angrily to a World-Class Player’s decision to join Liverpool as City increases bid to convince him
On Sunday, Pep Guardiola humorously responded to Liverpool fans’ chants of “sacked in the morning” by holding up six fingers, symbolizing his Premier League title victories. While his reaction was lighthearted, one of his players made comments that were significantly more controversial and offensive after Manchester City’s fourth consecutive league loss, which left them fifth in the standings, 11 points behind Liverpool.
Ortega’s Controversial Statement
During a post-match radio interview, Stefan Ortega—who started in place of Ederson for the game—made a disparaging comment about Liverpool in an attempt to defend Guardiola. Speaking to reporters, Ortega remarked (as quoted by Liverpool Echo):
“Someone told me before that this area [Liverpool] is probably not the best part in the UK. I think he reacted really well, yeah.”
Why Guardiola Must Intervene
Unlike Guardiola’s measured and good-natured response, Ortega’s remarks were unnecessary and disrespectful. While it’s reasonable to address fan taunts or discuss the game, making derogatory comments about a city and its residents crosses a line.
Such remarks perpetuate harmful stereotypes and fuel divisive narratives, something Liverpool and its people have unfortunately faced before, including recent chants mocking poverty. Whoever influenced Ortega with such baseless claims has done a disservice, not only to him but also to the spirit of sportsmanship.
Guardiola, renowned for fostering a respectful rivalry with Liverpool, should condemn Ortega’s comments and set a clear precedent. Competition on the field should never include demeaning a city or its community. Ortega’s words detract from the integrity of the sport and tarnish the values of mutual respect a
nd fair play.
