I don’t know why we signed him. With such a performance, he has proved that he’s just wasted funds. Paul Scholes Questions Manchester United’s Transfer Decisions After Tottenham Defeat

Following Manchester United’s disappointing 3-0 loss to Tottenham, club legend Paul Scholes has raised concerns about the team’s lack of structure and questioned the signing of Matthijs de Ligt.

The Red Devils suffered another setback at Old Trafford, conceding an early goal to Brennan Johnson within the first three minutes. Their struggles deepened when captain Bruno Fernandes received a red card in the 42nd minute for a reckless challenge on James Maddison. Tottenham capitalized on the advantage, with Dejan Kulusevski and Dominic Solanke adding to United’s misery in the second half.

Pressure Mounts on Ten Hag

With this result leaving United in 12th place in the Premier League standings, manager Erik ten Hag faces mounting pressure to deliver a turnaround in the upcoming clash against Aston Villa.

Scholes, speaking on SuperSport, did not hold back in his assessment of the team’s lack of identity under Ten Hag.

“You can’t predict how they’ll play,” he remarked. “It’s unclear whether they want to sit back, press high, or dominate possession. They look like a team without proper coaching.

“We saw from the first week how Ange Postecoglou set up Tottenham, and they have maintained that philosophy. But here we are, over two years into Ten Hag’s tenure, and United still look disorganized.”

Scholes also criticized the players’ energy and positioning, describing them as lacking enthusiasm and clarity. He believes these issues stem from ineffective training sessions.

Doubts Over De Ligt’s Impact

One of Scholes’ biggest criticisms was aimed at the £43 million signing of Matthijs de Ligt. He argued that the Dutch defender has not proven to be an improvement over Harry Maguire, who has been largely sidelined this season.

“When you sign new players, you expect them to elevate the squad. I don’t see that happening here,” Scholes said.

When asked if De Ligt represented a £50 million upgrade over Maguire, Scholes was adamant: “No, definitely not.”

Scholes Calls for Urgent Change

The former United midfielder also urged the squad to stop making excuses and take responsibility for their performances before Ten Hag’s position becomes untenable.

“These are experienced professionals who have cost the club a lot of money,” he emphasized. “Enough with the excuses. It’s time to establish a style of play and show some identity on the pitch.”

Scholes’ assessment reflects the frustrations of many Manchester United supporters who have been questioning the team’s direction. His remarks also highlight the stark contrast between Tottenham’s rapid tactical development under Postecoglou and United’s ongoing struggles under Ten Hag.

His comments about De Ligt further raise concerns about the club’s recruitment policies. Signed with high expectations, the Dutch defender has yet to prove he is a significant upgrade over Maguire.

Is Scholes being too harsh, or is his criticism justified? Does Manchester United need a complete overh

aul to regain its competitive edge?
