Chelsea are closing in on their first January signing after reaching an agreement with a £100m-rated South American Star Player

With the January transfer window rapidly approaching its deadline, clubs across Europe have intensified their recruitment efforts. Chelsea are among those still actively working to address several key positions if they hope to challenge for major honours in the future and secure Champions League qualification this season.

For the Blues to genuinely compete for the Premier League title, they’ll need reinforcements in at least three crucial areas: central defense, goalkeeper, and a clinical striker. There have been some promising developments on these fronts.

Regarding the center-back position, Chelsea are reportedly in talks to sign Jeremy Jacquet from Rennes. Should that deal fall through, they’ve also been linked with Bournemouth’s Marcos Senesi and Como’s Jacobo Ramon as alternative options.

Between the posts, Chelsea have brought back Teddy Sharman-Lowe from his loan at Bolton Wanderers and are monitoring Real Madrid’s Andriy Lunin. Meanwhile, current backup Filip Jorgensen is thought to be considering his future at Stamford Bridge. Now there’s been fresh news regarding the striker situation as well.

According to Indykaila News, a source with over 700,000 followers on X, Julian Alvarez could be available this summer, with Atletico Madrid willing to sanction his departure. The Argentine is said to be keen on returning to English football, and Chelsea are already positioning themselves to land him, with a reported price tag of approximately £75 million.

Since his 2024 switch from Manchester City, Alvarez has impressed individually at the Wanda Metropolitano. The 25-year-old has registered 40 goals and 13 assists across 84 appearances for Atletico.

However, after capturing the Champions League, FA Cup, and two Premier League titles with City, he likely anticipated adding more silverware to his collection. Unfortunately, success has been elusive under Diego Simeone, and Atletico currently appear well behind Spanish powerhouses Real Madrid and Barcelona.

Earlier reports from other sources suggested Atletico had no intention of selling Alvarez and might demand up to €150 million for his services. This latest update, however, claims the player wants a Premier League return and the club are prepared to accommodate his wishes.

Chelsea invested close to £100 million combined on Joao Pedro and Liam Delap last summer, yet neither has emerged as a reliable goal threat. The Brazilian has shown slightly more promise with 11 goals in 31 appearances for the Blues, while the ex-Ipswich striker has managed just three.

If these reports prove accurate, it appears Chelsea have recognized their mistake and are now targeting a proven finisher. Whether they can successfully land the Argentine this summer remains to be seen.
