Man United has made a “surprise” bid to recruit the winner of the Euro 2024 competition, surpassing Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Manchester City, and Chelsea in the process. His arrival is expected to add a new dimension to United’s attack and bring a fresh wave of excitement to Old Trafford
RB Leipzig’s 26-year-old midfielder, who was one of the standout performers at the recent European Championship, played in six of Spain’s seven matches, helping them secure their fourth title under Luis de la Fuente’s management.
Several leading European clubs, including Barcelona, Manchester City, Chelsea, Liverpool, Arsenal, and Bayern Munich, are reportedly interested in signing the RB Leipzig star.
Manchester United is also keen on acquiring Olmo. According to the Spanish publication AS, the club has made significant strides toward securing his signature.
United aims to strengthen Erik ten Hag’s squad further by adding French defender Leny Yoro and Dutch forward Joshua Zirkzee this summer, following the recent acquisitions of both players.
While Barcelona is considered United’s main competitor for Olmo, the Catalan giants are primarily focusing on signing Nico Williams, Olmo’s Spain teammate, who scored in the Euro 2024 final against England.
Olmo’s release clause is set at €60m (£52m) but can only be activated before July 20.
Since joining RB Leipzig from Dinamo Zagreb in 2020, Olmo has made 148 appearances and contributed to the club’s two domestic trophy wins.
Amidst the speculation about his future, Olmo stated during Euro 2024 that any club wishing to sign him must meet his release clause, adding that he remains focused on the tournament.
“My people know what I want to do… I have too much to do with the Euros to be thinking about other things,” he said before the final in Berlin. “I have a contract with Leipzig, and we have a very good relationship. There will be no problem. My €60 million clause until July 20? You know what you have to do. If not, you’ll have to fight a little later.”
Manchester United confirmed the signing of Lille defender Yoro earlier this week, following the earlier acquisition of Zirkzee.
“Signing for a club with the stature and ambition of Manchester United so early in my career is an incredible honor,” said Yoro, who had been linked with Real Madrid, PSG, and Liverpool before moving to Old Trafford.
“Since my first conversations with the club, they set out a clear plan for how I can develop in Manchester as part of this exciting project, and showed a lot of care for me and my family. I know about the history of young players at Manchester United and feel it can be the perfect place to reach my potential and achieve my ambitions, together with my new teammates. I cannot wait to get started.”
