Everton supporters were furious when referee Simon Hooper seemed to disregard the main VAR monitor while overturning his initial decision to grant Dominic Calvert-Lewin a penalty during Saturday’s match against Brighton.
In the second half of Everton’s 3-0 loss, Lewis Dunk appeared to have fouled Calvert-Lewin, leading to a penalty that could have potentially equalized the score for the team.
However, after being instructed to review the incident, Hooper changed his call, infuriating fans who described the decision as “shocking” and insisted it was an obvious penalty.
The situation escalated when the main monitor showed only Premier League and generic VAR logos instead of a replay, leading Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford to confront the referee.
According to the Premier League’s match report, they later confirmed to Mail Sport that Hooper had to rely on a backup monitor to review the incident.
