On Wednesday, 16-year-old Jim Thwaites experienced a rare and impressive opportunity by joining Manchester United’s first-team training session at Carrington, a significant accomplishment for someone his age. Recognized as a rising talent within the club, Thwaites was among a select few academy players invited to the senior training session, enhancing the squad as they prepared for their upcoming match against Brighton. This inclusion is viewed as a strong affirmation of his abilities, especially given his youth.

 

Thwaites has rapidly ascended through United’s academy ranks and is widely considered one of the most promising players in his age group. Last season, he demonstrated his exceptional talent by securing Manchester United’s prestigious Goal of the Season award at both the Under-16 and Under-18 levels. His outstanding performances have not only impressed his coaches but have also drawn attention from those closely watching the club’s future prospects.

 

During the previous season, Thwaites played a pivotal role in the Under-16 team’s success in the Premier League North, where he astonishingly contributed 78 goals. His remarkable achievements did not go unnoticed, with even coaching staff from rival Manchester City, who had dominated the U18 league for four consecutive seasons, acknowledging United’s superior quality last season. Thwaites’ significant contribution underscored his ability to perform at a higher level.

 

Although primarily featuring for the U16s, Thwaites’ talent earned him nine appearances with the U18s and two substitute appearances for the Under-21s. His swift rise through the ranks reflects the club’s confidence in his potential. As the new season approaches, Thwaites is expected to be a key player in Adam Lawrence’s Under-18 team, likely taking on a prominent role.
