“I actually had problems at Manchester United, but it’s not everything you heard was true. This was actually what happened. They gave me back my number but (No.11) but I felt disappointed when they told me this…”-Formal Manchester United attacker Mason Greenwood narrated what really happened and why he left Manchester United for good after huge accusation that almost ruined his career. “I was getting ready to play for Manchester United this season but you can’t believe what they told me”

Mason Greenwood, the talented 22-year-old forward, recently completed a permanent transfer from Manchester United to Marseille this summer, quickly making his mark in Ligue 1. During his debut for the French club, now led by former Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi, Greenwood wasted no time in displaying his goal-scoring abilities, netting two goals and making an immediate impact.

Greenwood’s international career, however, has been more complex. He made his sole appearance for England’s senior team in September 2020 during a Nations League match against Iceland. Entering the match as a late substitute, his introduction to international football was marred by controversy. After the game, Greenwood and his England teammate Phil Foden were sent home for violating Covid-19 protocols, marking the start of a series of off-field issues that would disrupt Greenwood’s international prospects.

Since that appearance, Greenwood has not been called up to the England squad again. His absence was further complicated by legal troubles in January 2022, when he was arrested on charges including attempted rape, controlling and coercive behavior, and assault causing actual bodily harm. These charges were officially brought against him in October 2022 but were later dropped by the Crown Prosecution Service in February 2023. Despite the legal case concluding in his favor, the incident left a lasting impact on Greenwood’s international career and public perception.

Nevertheless, Greenwood’s future in international football could still be promising due to his Jamaican heritage. According to FIFA rules, players with fewer than four competitive appearances for one national team before turning 21 can switch their allegiance to another country they are eligible to represent. This opens the door for Greenwood to potentially play for Jamaica, a possibility that is gaining attention.

Adding to this development, Jamaica recently appointed Steve McClaren, the former Manchester United assistant coach, as their new national team manager. In a recent interview, McClaren hinted at the possibility of Greenwood joining the Jamaican squad. He mentioned having spoken with Greenwood, saying, “I met Mason and we had a conversation. I plan to meet everyone when I return and see if they are interested in playing for Jamaica. Commitment is key. I will ensure we have discussions with all the [eligible] players. We have a list.” This indicates McClaren’s proactive approach in recruiting players who could strengthen Jamaica’s international chances.

Reports from *The Sun* suggest that Greenwood has decided to switch his international allegiance to Jamaica. These reports also indicate that the Jamaican Football Federation has already begun the formal process by submitting a request to the English Football Association to approve the switch.

Jamaica’s ambitions are clear. The country has not qualified for the FIFA World Cup since their historic appearance in 1998. However, with the expansion of the World Cup to 48 teams in the 2026 edition, to be held in the United States, Mexico, and Canada, there is renewed hope. With more qualifying spots available, Jamaica sees an opportunity to return to football’s biggest stage. McClaren, who signed a two-year contract to manage the Jamaican national team, will be eager to use the expanded format to secure a World Cup spot for the Reggae Boyz.

For Mason Greenwood, the potential switch to Jamaica represents more than just changing his national team. It signifies a fresh start, an opportunity to redefine his international career, and a chance to showcase his skills on the global stage once again. This move could reignite his football journey, providing him with a platform to make a significant contribution to Jamaican football and perhaps write a new chapter in his career, marked by redemption and success internationally.
