There is debate, however, about whether Antony, another ex-Ajax player, would have fit the financial criteria.
The £85 million signing of Antony has frustrated fans, as the Brazilian has managed only 11 goals and 5 assists across 83 matches. Despite being the second-most expensive player in United’s history, Antony has barely featured this season. His last appearance was a late substitution for Amad in the 90th minute against Brighton, just before Joao Pedro scored a stoppage-time winner. Ironically, Amad, the player he replaced, has been outperforming him.
Amad was United’s most dangerous player in the Southampton match, contributing to the team’s first three chances. After Andre Onana saved a penalty, De Ligt quickly followed with a goal. Amad also assisted Marcus Rashford’s goal and completed his first full 90 minutes for the senior team, signaling his potential for more game time moving forward.
Amad’s determination to step up this season has already seen him equal Antony’s Premier League goal tally from last season, putting pressure on Ten Hag to reconsider Antony’s place in the squad.
