Arne Slot gave a preview of Liverpool’s upcoming Champions League match against AC Milan during a press conference on Monday evening.

The Reds’ head coach addressed the media at San Siro after the team arrived in Italy ahead of their 8 pm BST kick-off on Tuesday against the Serie A club.

Slot, managing his first Liverpool Champions League game on his birthday, humorously downplayed the personal significance of the day, focusing on the match itself due to the rich history of both clubs and the renowned stadium.

When asked about Dominik Szoboszlai approaching 50 appearances for the team, Slot emphasized the midfielder’s critical role, especially in pressing. However, he expressed a desire for Szoboszlai to boost his goal and assist tally, believing he has room for growth within Liverpool’s strong squad.

Slot discussed the challenge posed by AC Milan, stressing that while no team operates out of fear, there is considerable respect for Milan’s form and players like Tijjani Reijnders. He reiterated that Liverpool respects Milan’s quality but doesn’t use fear as a motivator.

Reflecting on Liverpool’s recent loss to Nottingham Forest, Slot acknowledged the frustration shared by the team and himself but noted that every game is different, and Milan would present a unique challenge compared to Forest.

Slot also touched on the new Champions League format, admitting it’s too early to predict how many points would be needed to advance. He appreciated the increase in high-profile matches but said only time would show how the format affects the players.

Regarding the Forest defeat, Slot rejected the idea that squad rotation was the main issue, instead blaming the opponent’s style and the underperformance of his players. He conceded that rotation might be necessary moving forward, especially with players returning from international duty, but stressed it wasn’t the sole reason for the loss.

Lastly, Slot spoke about Milan’s Rafael Leao, acknowledging his threat and highlighting the need for a collective effort to counter him. He also confirmed Alexis Mac Allister’s importance to the team, stating he would determine how many minutes Mac Allister would play against Milan.
