Viktor Gyokeres, a striker for Sporting CP, is expected to join Manchester United in January following the appointment of Ruben Amorim as the team’s new manager. The deal is nearly complete. Let’s go.
Following Viktor Gyokeres’ hat-trick in Sporting CP’s recent 4-0 win over Manchester City, which marked City’s worst defeat since 2020, the Swedish forward has quickly become a popular topic.
This victory was especially meaningful for Sporting’s manager, Ruben Amorim, who previously endured a 5-0 Champions League defeat to City in Lisbon in 2022. Interestingly, on that same day, Gyokeres was playing for Coventry City, which lost 2-0 to Cardiff City.
Gyokeres had previously scored 43 goals in 116 appearances for Coventry, which drew Amorim’s interest and led to his £20 million move to Sporting in 2023. Gyokeres’ agent later commented, “I only brought Gyokeres to Sporting because of Ruben Amorim.”
With this hat-trick performance, some have speculated about a potential move to Manchester United. However, both Gyokeres and Amorim have downplayed any such rumors, citing the forward’s hefty £83.9 million release clause.
Last week, Amorim assured the press, “I won’t be moving any of Sporting’s players in January,” emphasizing Gyokeres’ €100 million price tag, which complicates any transfer.
This situation also presents a unique dilemma for Manchester United and Dan Ashworth, who was Brighton’s technical director when Gyokeres was sold to Coventry for £1 million in 2021. Coventry later profited £19 million from his transfer to Sporting and will benefit further through a 15% sell-on clause, though this drops to 10% if Gyokeres reaches specific performance milestones.
Given these factors, Sporting may hold out for an even higher transfer fee, keeping Coventry’s share in any future sa
le in mind.
