What do you think—should Liverpool sell Nunez?

Liverpool’s Summer Transfer Plans: Could a Striker Overhaul Be on the Cards?

Liverpool’s squad is expected to undergo changes this summer, with one key area potentially seeing major reinforcements, according to journalist James Pearce.

Recent reports from Daily Mail’s Lewis Steele suggest that Liverpool’s transfer budget won’t be a limiting factor, particularly if key players like Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk, or Trent Alexander-Arnold choose not to extend their contracts.

At the same time, CaughtOffside has claimed that Atletico Madrid are monitoring Darwin Nunez, who recently came under scrutiny from his manager regarding his work rate.

Is Nunez Headed for an Exit?

Speaking on GIVEMESPORT’s Market Madness podcast, Pearce hinted that Nunez’s time at Anfield could be nearing its end. He pointed out that the Uruguayan hasn’t shown the expected level of progress this season. While Liverpool turned down interest from Saudi clubs in January—due to the challenge of securing a replacement mid-season—a summer transfer could be a more realistic option.

Pearce believes that a fresh start may benefit both Nunez and Liverpool, with the club likely to target a new No. 9 before the next campaign kicks off.

Finding a Suitable Replacement

Despite his dedication and energy on the pitch, Nunez’s goal-scoring record remains a concern. With just six goals in 35 appearances this season, his long-term role under Arne Slot remains uncertain.

Comparisons with Newcastle’s Alexander Isak, who was signed for a similar fee in the same summer, highlight the issue. Isak has netted 56 goals in 97 games, including 21 this season—far surpassing Nunez’s 39 goals in 131 matches for Liverpool.

While his future isn’t set in stone, Nunez’s lack of regular starts in the Premier League suggests he may not be Slot’s preferred option. If Liverpool opt to move on from him, securing a high-quality striker will be a top priority—especially given the financial resources available for a major

attacking upgrade.
