When Brighton pushed for an equaliser against Chelsea on Sunday, a little-known VAR rule lost the Seagulls a late corner. The move infuriated Brighton’s players and supporters.
At Stamford Bridge, the Blues prevailed 3-2 thanks to a brace from Enzo Fernandez. However, Joao Pedro’s goal in stoppage time cut the lead, and referee Craig Pawson added drama by seemingly awarding the Seagulls a penalty.
After a VAR check, though, Pawson examined the screen and determined that Levi Colwill, a loan player from Brighton in the past, was not guilty of handball since the ball struck his face before heading out for a corner.
Under VAR rules, play does not resume from where it stopped; rather, it begins from a drop ball following a reversed VAR call.
The Brighton players were quite irritated by this since they were deprived of the chance to attempt to steal an equaliser from the set piece.
Pawson followed the rules appropriately in this case, but it didn’t stop some followers from criticising “corruption” online.

It was necessary for another platform user to clarify the circumstances, as football fans are not generally aware of them. “Unfortunately, that is the current law,” they wrote. A drop ball to the keeper will occur from any penalty that VAR reverses.

Other people, on the other hand, expressed greater understanding for Pawson’s interpretation of the rule, stating: “The referee made the correct call.” Brighton supporters ought to keep quiet.
