The Premier League’s referees’ governing body, PGMOL, has explained the reasoning behind not awarding Liverpool a penalty in the final moments of their Premier League clash with Manchester City.

Liverpool had a chance to clinch a vital victory in the title race against Manchester City, but the match ended in a draw. John Stones opened the scoring for City, only for Alexis Mac Allister to level with a penalty. Despite dominating the second half, Liverpool couldn’t capitalize on their chances.

In stoppage time, Liverpool believed they deserved another penalty when JĆ©rĆ©my Doku’s challenge on Mac Allister was reviewed by VAR. However, VAR official Stuart Atwell upheld the initial decision, leading to frustration and an angry reaction from JĆ¼rgen Klopp.

PGMOL defended the decision, claiming Doku had played the ball, though former referee Mike Dean disagreed, suggesting Doku was fortunate. Despite the controversy, the match highlighted the quality of both teams. Although Doku’s challenge seemed reckless, the match ended in a draw, reflecting a fair outcome.
