The incident occurred following Sunday’s Premier League match against Aston Villa, in which James did not play due to injury. Jarred Gillett, the match official, is claimed to have challenged James in the tunnel after the game, which Chelsea lost due to Ollie Watkin’s late goal.
“Reece James has been charged with a breach of FA Rule E3 following Chelsea’s Premier League game against Aston Villa on Sunday, September 24,” according to a statement.
“It is alleged that the defender used inappropriate, insulting, and/or abusive words and/or behavior toward a match official in the tunnel following the game.” Reece James has until Friday, September 29th, to respond to this charge.”
James is not anticipated to return from his injury until late October.
Chelsea play Brighton in the Carabao Cup tonight before traveling to Fulham for a Premier League game on Monday. Five days before the international break, a longer trip to Burnley awaits.
