Liverpool is rumoured to be still interested in young Chelsea star Levi Colwill as they search for a new defender in January.

Chelsea news, information, and commentary

The 20-year-old has made a name for himself in Mauricio Pochettino’s starting lineup, appearing in all but one of Chelsea’s 27 games this season, with 23 of those appearances coming from starts.

Having earned his international debut in October, he is now in the running for a spot in the England squad for Euro 2024. He was predicted for great things after excellent loan periods at Huddersfield and Brighton.

Colwill attracted a lot of interest from teams last summer, including Liverpool, Brighton, Manchester City, and Tottenham, but Pochettino was keen to keep him, and in the end, he inked a new deal that would last until 2029.

TalkSPORT is suggesting, though, that the Reds are keeping an eye on Colwill’s circumstances and may decide to take action given their need for defensive reinforcements.

Joel Matip will not be able to play again this season. Kyle Andrews and Kostas Tsimikas, two left-backs, are both out with shoulder ailments. Trent Alexander-Arnold is anticipated to be back from his knee surgery by the end of the month.

A new defender is undoubtedly needed for the Premier League leaders, as their schedule fills up quickly. Colwill will appeal to Jurgen Klopp especially because he can play left- and center-back.

Although he is a homegrown player, there is no sign that Chelsea would be open to selling him, even if a transfer would just result in financial gain.

Todd Boehly and company, who are concerned about breaking FFP regulations, would benefit somewhat from this. For this reason, fellow homegrown players Conor Gallagher and Armando Broja are also connected to moves abroad.

Colwill is expected to play Tuesday night in Chelsea’s crucial Carabao Cup semi-final second-leg matchup with Middlesbrough.
