After his performance against Leicester City, Raheem Sterling issued a message to Chelsea fans. On Sunday, the Blues advanced to the FA Cup semifinals, but Sterling had a difficult afternoon.
After being fouled for a penalty in the first half, the Chelsea forward took the spot kick instead of Cole Palmer, who was supposed to take it. The 29-year-old Sterling tried to put the ball in the middle, but Leicester’s custodian Jakub Stolarczyk easily stopped it when it went to his right.
The England international did set up Palmer’s goal to give Chelsea a 2-0 lead before halftime, but he also wasted a one-on-one opportunity later in the half. Sterling was mocked for lofting a free kick from the edge of the area over the crossbar as the Blues plotted to surrender their lead in the second half. Mauricio Pochettino was told by Chelsea supporters to “Get him off,” and when the forward was replaced, he was met with a mix of cheers and jeers.
Sterling said on social media to Chelsea supporters, “Wembley Bound.” I apologise to all of the Chelsea supporters for the missed penalty. I promise to return ten times stronger to support the team’s victory and to never give up on the badge. Come on, Blues.
Sterling has been having trouble returning to his greatest level of play lately, and the most recent England selection did not include him. In his post-match press conference, Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino supported Sterling’s choice to take the penalty.
“Cole and Raheem are free to make mistakes; just keep an eye out for me. The decision is made, and I will always support my players’ decisions on the pitch,” added Pochettino. “That will soon mature and grow, and we will always be happy making decisions.”
In response to a question regarding Sterling’s handling of the Stamford Bridge environment, Pochettino said, “I think I cannot hide anything.” I believe that you share my belief that the feelings weren’t healthy for him, but I’m still going to stand by him and we will all support him. I think he was fantastic, and this is a wonderful chance to help him.
“He has an incredible resume, having played in large teams and having experience. Of course, he missed the penalty and a few opportunities today.
“However, look, I think I am happy with him and we will support him. I see the opportunities we have, and I think they will demonstrate that we are creating something because I think we will support him and we will undoubtedly gain the advantage in the game that he needs to help the team.”
