Chelsea owner Todd Boehly to be replaced as Chelsea chairman Next Summer but may return in unique deal it has been confirmed by Fabrizo Romano this evening.
In 2027, Chelsea will take over as chairman from Todd Boehly, under a deal with Clearlake Capital.
According to a deal between Clearlake Capital and the American co-owners, the chairmanship can alternate every five years following the club’s 2022 acquisition.
The Blues have now made the decision to use that option as soon as possible, at the conclusion of the 2026–2027 campaign.
Boehly, who only owns a small stake in the company, was designated the first chairman as part of its takeover in 2022.
Behdad Eghbali and Jose Feliciano run Clearlake Capital, which holds a 61.5 percent investment. Boehly shares the remaining 38.5 percent equally with Hansjorg Wyss and Mark Walter.
Although Boehly’s position is scheduled to terminate in 2027, there is a provision that allows the American billionaire to take back the chairmanship at the conclusion of the subsequent five-year cycle in 2032.
The American is allegedly getting farther away from Clearlake Capital, though, who seem to be making all the decisions at Stamford Bridge.
According to additional reports, Boehly’s firm owns “common stock,” which provides protection against financial losses, while Clearlake Capital, the largest owner, has “preferred stock.”
Although a new chairman has not been chosen before 2027, Feliciano or Eghbali may accept the position directly or another person may be nominated to it.
Boehly will lose his position; however, it has not been decided whether or not that will occur.
That being said, Boehly may be able to recover the position in 2032 because of the arrangement to alternate chairmanships every five years.
He and his group might, therefore, potentially designate a chairman in its place.
Simon Jordan criticises Chelsea Supporters’ Trust for the way the team is managed in a letter to the owners, Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali.
Boehly and Clearlake are on good terms, so there isn’t a breach between them—in fact, any significant decision requires the signatures of both parties.
Nonetheless, the fact that such a choice is being taken suggests that they think Chelsea can still do better.
Chelsea fans have recently taken offence at Boehly, who also owns twenty percent of the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Being the most visible member of the present ownership group, he has been criticised by the media and has drawn chants from Chelsea supporters criticising his management of the team.
While remaining mainly in the background, Eghbali is just as involved as, if not more so, in the day-to-day operations of the London firm.
Chelsea finished 12th in the previous season and is presently ranked 11th in the Premier League. Earlier this month, the team reported pre-tax losses of £90.1 million.
