Enzo Fernández was furious in face to face with Mason Mount yesterday: “This is Chelsea, you c*nt!”, told former Blues midfielder

About 14 games ago, in the FA Cup third round victory against Wigan Athletic in the opening game of 2024, Manchester United last gave up fewer than 16 shots in a game.

The last time they allowed fewer than 20 shots on goal was five weeks and six encounters ago, when they defeated Nottingham Forest 1-0 on the road.

United has attempted an incredible 134 shots in the last five games; it’s almost miraculous that just 11 of those shots have been successful. There are multiple causes for the leak.

Due to the season-long injury crisis, the backline has been a constant source of frustration for the team.

Only two center backs are currently totally fit after Raphael Varane and Jonny Evans both left the game against Chelsea due to injuries.

Tyrell Malacia has missed the entire season because of a chronic knee injury, while Luke Shaw has missed more games than he has played this season.

Meanwhile, Kobbie Mainoo, 18, has been forced to fend for himself far too often, and pivot Casemiro, who is now also a concern about injuries, has been awful this season. That absolves Erik ten Hag of accountability. Upon his arrival, the Dutchman was labeled as a pragmatic, a trait he has hardly displayed on the field.

Ten Hag has made it clear that he is not overly concerned about the amount of shots his team is giving the opposition. After the game on Thursday, he dismissed any defensive problems his squad may have had, saying, “It is ludicrous.”

“We demonstrated that we were fourth in the league for goals conceded, and everyone was talking to each other afterward. We are a strong team with excellent goalkeeping, so there was nothing I could do.”

Afterwards, at his news conference, he identified specific mistakes, adding, “We made the wrong decisions and if you have to defend, you have to do it right. Additionally, making individual mistakes can be quite annoying when you’re playing a strong game.”
