Former Man United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar has been appointed as the manager of shocking Premier League Club this evening

Edwin van der Sar, a Manchester United star, has hinted at a possible comeback to football after a year away.

After retiring from football, the former goalkeeper joined Ajax’s board of directors. Van der Sar began as the Amsterdam club’s head of marketing in 2012, progressing to sporting CEO in 2015 before becoming CEO in 2016.

The Dutchman announced his resignation from this position in the summer of 2023, following Ajax’s dismal season and Erik ten Hag’s departure to Old Trafford. Shortly after, the 53-year-old was transported to the hospital with a brain hemorrhage, but has since fully recovered.

After a year away from football, Van der Sar posted a comment on Instagram implying that he may be returning in some manner. He wrote: “Today marks precisely one year since I announced my resignation as CEO of Ajax.

“I appreciate everyone’s heartfelt farewells. Serving this club, first as a player and then as CEO, has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life.

“This period was full with memorable moments, but there were also difficult periods, which are part of any trip. I reflect on the remarkable moments and incredible individuals I’ve encountered. All captured brilliantly in a single photograph.

“During the previous month, I had time to rest and think with my family and friends. It’s time for some new adventures and experiences in the near future. Thank you, everyone.”

If Van der Sar wants to return to football as a CEO, United is unlikely to hire him. Co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe has nominated Omar Berrada to this position.

What is certain is that United fans will always warmly welcome Van der Sar back to Old Trafford after his six-year tenure there.
